Water Initiatives
In arid and semi-arid regions like northern Kenya, up to 70% of the population faces challenges in accessing clean and reliable water sources (NDMA, 2018). These essential services are crucial for the health, dignity, and economic well-being of communities, yet many residents face daily struggles to secure even the most basic necessities. These challenges contribute to severe health issues, hinder educational opportunities, and perpetuate cycles of poverty. According to the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS) 2014, many households in these areas lack access to clean water. Residents often rely on seasonal rivers and boreholes, which are frequently dry or contaminated. ACTNOW KENYA stand in solidarity to address this critical challenges in rural corners of Laikipia North.

The Nanyuki River Clean-up Campaign
Our programs focus on ensuring that communities as safe from water pollution, and water mileage. Through advocacy campaigns we are able to hold polluters responsible and influence clean ups around critical water points like rivers that serve both wildlife and rural communities in Laikipia. In 2020, ACTNOW KENYA in collaboration with other youth organizations like Mt. Kenya Youth Hub among others led a clean water campaign to stop the harmful disposal of Nanyuki river that drains water to Ewaso Nyiro River which serves communities in Laikipia North. This program attracted local government and other organizations to clean the river and take policy actions. We remain inspired by these efforts to continue champion water conservation in Laikipia County.
